Zoetrope cinematography shows the frames inside a movement: stroboscopic slices of a spinning action, motion as a drum of poses. You see the sampling, not a smooth blur.
Narrative function
A horse's legs become a ring of stills. A spinning body is a drum of slices.
Use it when the point is that motion is made of frames, a toy of persistence of vision on screen. It is the wrong tool for ordinary slow motion, and for stop-motion of a puppet that never spins.
